Burundi | Kibingo ‘Oro’ Red Bourbon (340g)

Kibingo is a Cup of Excellence winner in Burundi. They have many projects providing humanitarian aid to the people who are contributing coffee to this washing station. This season, Kibingo experimented with different strains of yeast and ‘inoculated’ particular lots. The inoculation can enhance certain flavour qualities in the coffee dependent on the variety of yeast.

This batch of ‘Oro’ inoculated red bourbon is particularly special – balanced, clean with a lot of cup complexity and an amazing lingering finish.

Description

Travel through taste.

The Kibingo washing station is located in the north of the Kayanza province of Burundi, bordering Rwanda. This is the most prominent growing region for coffee in Burundi. The average altitude is 1800 m.

The station was built in 1986 and is located at 1893 m. Working with nearly 3000 local small holder coffee farmers in the local area, Kibingo has become a well respected and well regarded coffee station in the area. There’s a wooden bridge leading to the station that goes over a small river, this bridge is where the name Kibingo originated – meaning ‘reeds’ in Kirundi, the local language. Reeds were planted along the edges of the river to prevent erosion. This river flows to the Nile River.
